A lot happens at your “final” Invisalign appointment – from taking the “after” photos and looking at all of your progress to seeing your new and improved smile without any attachments or aligners. Of course, this is also when you get your retainer, which will help you preserve the results you worked so hard for. But how long do you need to wear it? You can find out the answer here!
So, How Long Do You Need to Wear Your Retainer After Invisalign?
When you first get your retainer, your dentist may recommend wearing it for 20+ hours a day. Don’t worry – this is usually just a temporary measure so your teeth have time to “set” in place. After a few weeks or months, you’ll be given the green light to transition to only wearing your retainer at night. In an effort to preserve your results, it’s recommended that you make this a lifelong habit.
What Will Happen If I Don’t Wear My Retainer?
Orthodontic relapse is the phenomenon where teeth begin to drift back into their previously misaligned positions. Unfortunately, it happens to upwards of 50% of patients in the years following their time with braces. That’s why it’s so important that you follow your dentist’s instructions and wear your retainer each night while you sleep – it’s the easiest way to keep your smile straight!
How To: Care for Your Retainer
Let’s face it: if your retainers develop a yellow hue or unpleasant odor, then you won’t wear them. The best way to prevent that from happening is to adopt good habits, like:
- Removing your retainer before eating or drinking anything (other than water)
- Rinsing your retainer with clean water each time you take it off
- Soaking your retainer in a dentist-recommended cleaner for 15 minutes a day
- Using a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your retainer each morning and evening
- Not using hot water to clean your retainer (the high temperature can cause them to warp)
It’s also important to mention here that if you notice a small crack or chip in your retainer, you shouldn’t take the “wait and see” approach. Instead, give your dentist a call so they can repair it before it splits down the middle or breaks into multiple pieces.
